High Income Child Benefit Charge

« Back to Glossary Index

The High Income Child Benefit Charge is a tax charge that applies if you or your partner get Child Benefit and either of you has an individual income over £50,000. As your income rises above this threshold, you’ll have to pay back some or all of your Child Benefit through a tax charge. The higher your income, the bigger the charge—once it hits £60,000, the benefit is effectively cancelled out. If this affects you, you can choose to keep receiving Child Benefit and pay the charge, or opt out of receiving the benefit to avoid the paperwork.
