Blind Person’s Allowance

« Back to Glossary Index

Blind Person’s Allowance is an extra chunk of tax-free income available if you’re registered as blind or severely sight impaired. It’s added on top of your Personal Allowance and helps reduce the amount of income tax you pay. If you don’t earn enough to use the full allowance, you can transfer what’s left to your spouse or civil partner.

It’s one of the few tax breaks that doesn’t require you to fill out pages of paperwork—usually, just letting HMRC know will get you set up. A small but meaningful way the tax system aims to offer extra support where it’s needed.
