Class 4 National Insurance Contributions are a type of NIC paid by self-employed individuals, but these are based on your annual taxable profits. You start paying Class 4 NICs once your profits go above a certain threshold, and the contributions are calculated as a percentage of your profits. Unlike Class 2 NICs, you can’t pay these voluntarily—they’re automatically worked out and added to your Self Assessment tax bill.
