Marriage Allowance

« Back to Glossary Index

Marriage Allowance lets one spouse or civil partner transfer a portion of their Personal Allowance (the amount you can earn tax-free each year) to the other, if one is a non-taxpayer and the other is a basic-rate taxpayer. This can reduce your overall tax bill as a couple—by up to a few hundred pounds a year. It’s simple to apply and can be backdated for up to four years.
