The Rent a Room Scheme lets you earn up to a set amount each year tax-free by renting out a furnished room in your main home. The threshold is reviewed from time to time, but if your rental income stays within the limit, you don’t need to pay tax or even declare it to HMRC. Go over the limit, and you can still use the scheme to reduce your taxable income.
