Savings Allowance

« Back to Glossary Index

The Savings Allowance is the amount of interest you can earn from savings accounts each tax year before paying any income tax. The allowance depends on your income tax band: basic-rate taxpayers can earn more tax-free interest than higher-rate taxpayers. If your interest stays within the limit, you won’t pay tax—banks and building societies handle this automatically, so you don’t need to claim it.
